On Writing Articles, Using Best Tools And Telling Stories
Writing is hardest when you try to write about something you don’t know anything of. But once you know a little, you can put down your perspectives and then boom there is a paragraph.
And if you are reading books, learning how the story flows then you can craft some kind of story to say what you want to say.
Try to write it down again and you will find it difficult again. Because you are not used to the process of jotting down your thoughts.
Many people stuck because they are thinking of writing the best words. You can’t and won’t be able to become the best from the first day. So you shouldn’t try. Instead aim to write, just anything and it is fine.
That is the reason there are a writer’s block tips going on around. Many people claim that they have writers’ block where they can’t think of anything to write. What they are actually saying is one of the following :
- You didn’t read as many books, articles to understand this thing.
- You haven’t experienced this in real life so I feel I can’t write.
- You want to write the best article ever. Until then I might not write anything.
- They are in a delusion where they are looking for excuses.
- You don’t want to write something which will offend someone.
And many such excuses. But that’s what they are – an excuse to shy away from the process of writing.
Tips are always appreciated as long as it makes the writing process easier. Because sitting at a place and typing away words which make sense is difficult. While talking, you can use multiple languages, gestures and make faces. But in writing, only your words have to do the magic.
So there are some structures which are helpful in making sure you write better and readers read.
- Write short paragraphs.
- Write short sentences.
- Avoid complicated words.
- Avoid getting too technical.
- Check if the basic grammar is in place.
- Use list.
- Give headings and subheadings.
Having a nice structure helps you write in a better manner, and it gives the reader enough white space to not get lost in chunks of text.
Editor And Yourself
If you want to make sure your writing is a good reflection on the work you are trying to portray then hiring an editor is the way to go. Of course, you can get away without editing everything, but it helps to make your message concise, close the loopholes and most of the times it helps you to see things which you are blinded by because you were the writer.
In the end, you need to read out the article or message you wish to publish – to see if it makes sense while hearing it out.
If it does then it is fine to publish your writing. It is fine otherwise too but going this way helps you position yourself as a better writer. And aren’t we all looking to do more?
Of course, you can’t follow all of it and still write rocking content. But it has to be readable for it to be appreciated. So of all the things, using short paragraphs and basic grammar remains of high importance.
This way your writing will shine — not because it is the best. But because your message was conveyed to the reader.
And slowly if you persist long enough, your writing will naturally grow. Practice is what makes you learn different things, reading helps, experience new things help. But all of this will take time. For now, you have to sit down and write – no matter how bad it is. Write it down and then, whatever happens, sit down again tomorrow to write again.
Your future self having written more than 1000 times will thank you for sticking and doing the work every day – because it matters.
The Love For Writing Tools
If you want to write then you will do that. It doesn’t matter the tools you have access to – physical notebook and pen, laptop or typewriter.
Yes, some might be easier for you. But a writer writes with the difficult tools too. The art of writing stems from practice of writing and you do despite the difficult condition.
But if you have access to different things then you force yourself to write on tough things.
Thanks to internet, now you can find many different writing platforms, combinations and make the most from your writing experience. And for me, it had done wonders. For example, I write most of my blog post on Google docs and I couldn’t imagine anything else which would fuel my typing hands.
It works so well that it feels like I am taking a shortcut. And that’s why I want to share it with you so you can focus on your writing and take it to the next level.
1. Google Docs
The number thing for me is Google docs. It is so white that I feel compelled to write something. Couple that with the ‘Nunito -Semibold font’, it pleases my eyes as I type words. And as such, I keep on writing without any distraction.
Although medium advertises as a publishing platform for everyone with less hassle. I love them for the writing experience it provides. Their writing interface is beautiful it makes your writing looks big, beautiful and worthy. Since I publish some articles on medium too, I can say it is a beautiful writing tool.
Another publishing platform which helps established bloggers to easily set up patron support has a beautiful writing interface too.
I signed up for them and although I don’t write often because of other issues – their writing tool is a superb one with minimal extras. And as such, I sometimes write my drafts in them.
4. Your Personal
When I started writing, it was in a physical book. And then I transitioned into the online world. I used to write on Google’s Blogspot platform. After writing for so many years, I upgraded myself to the WordPress platform.
And after many iterations, I finally settled on Google docs version. For you, it can be totally different and it’s okay.
The gist is – although being a writer you can write on anything – why not use the available resource and make most of your writing journey.
Go and find your comfortable place so that you write more, free flowing ideas come in and your level of writing goes up.
Writing is a difficult job, like every other job. It’s a craft and takes practice, hard work, and enrollment to become commendable.
So once you decide on being a writer, you have to choose the type of writing you intend to do. For example, there are poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and also choose the genre like science, philosophy, arts, and many others.
It all starts with experimenting with whatever comes to your mind. Sometimes you churn out fictional stories to draw a point, and sometimes you paint a picture of break up with poetry.
But all of those words are unable to connect. When you haven’t read enough of the writing, you think you are making good progress.
Or consider that writing 3 to 4 lines gives you a sensation that you have written enough. Only when you explore the writing world – you come across masters who write daily, read many times, and keeps on challenging their craft to another level. For example, writing 2000 words every day with the intent to form it as a habit. Most of that writing is going to be crap, and that’s the point. You are doing this to push yourself. So in order to write every day that much, you will go out and experience, see, make conclusions in addition to reading many different genres.
The Gradual Growth
Once you start writing seriously, it starts to take off. Your writing seems to improve at a faster pace than before.
One way to do this is to shatter your beliefs. You might think you are capable of writing only 1 article per week. Try to come up with 2 ideas, and then slowly you will end up with more than 1 idea in a day.
The process isn’t to publish everything. While you can do so, it is a practice habit, so when you publish at whatever frequency it is your best work by many hours of grilling.
There is no way you can’t grow if you put in hard work. It might take years, but you will see the progression – the ability to form better sentences, writing things which make sense and writing faster.
You get rid of the disturbance time with practice. Earlier when you were writing 100 words, you spent half the time pondering, getting tired and typing slowly.
In contrast, now you write focused, fast, and the ideas keep flowing. So you end up writing more and better in the same time frame.
Writing is a subjective art. While many things can be objectively improved, it boils down to the readers. If enough people read and give approvals for your writing, then that is sufficient for you.
You may not need to go and become the best in writing like many great authors. And this information is crucial.
Because it means you don’t have to strive to write perfectly. You need to write in a good enough way.
But the thing you are writing about needs to be something people are craving for. You may write in high-level jargon about something useful to everyday people. Although your writing is incredible, it isn’t helpful.
Hence, you must note who is reading your content and use the languages, style, and tone accordingly. That way, you have higher chances of success. Else, your writing will be lost in the ever-growing base of a content dump on the internet.
It helps if you ask – what is that you are hoping to solve and what your ideal reader is looking for. The mutualism of these two will be the magic you are looking for.
At this point, you might be thinking about where do stories fit in. Maybe it exists in fiction writing because that is what the name suggests.
So if you are non-fiction write or a poet, you can skip on being good at the story. And at this moment, I need you to think about a good and bad time from your life. Go ahead and speak it loud.
Chances are you told the incident with emotions, arc, and final act. For example, ‘I was thirsty after climbing for 2 hours, and there was no water available. The last stretch was challenging; I almost gave up. But then my friends pushed me and then with every last bit of energy, I tried and boom I got at the top. And then I drank the water which was available over there. Water never tasted so good.
This story – is it a fiction or non-fiction. It isn’t something you have imagined, it is a real story, and something positive can be taken from it.
The crux is whatever form of writing you do or whoever your client is – be it some old tech company whose customer base is above 50 years old people, you need stories.
And those stories help connect, see more in-depth meaning, and help your readers join in. Try to read any excellent writing as per your standard, and you can see story woven into it.
Try to make up stories, draw from real-life examples, add depth – this will all help in you becoming a better writer. What is your life you are living – a movie in the making made of many sub-stories, isn’t it?
Read This Checklist Before You Write Another Word
A simple guide to writing better.
Writing can feel hard. When you sit down and try to write, the blank page can seem intimidating. The words might not come. And you will feel like a fraud.
Are you a writer if you write specific words or specific length of it. What if you can jot down only 100 words per session. The stories simply don’t go anywhere and then you sigh.
Maybe the inspiration isn’t enough or that the mood is off. Or it isn’t the day to write. All of these seem valid excuses until you realize that they are simply excuses.
Let’s get those out of the window. And focus on the writing your next masterpiece. But before that, you need to be ready to write. Here’s how…
You can’t come up with unique and strong perspectives until you have read many varied perspectives. For example, if you want to write a fitness blog, the best thing to do is subscribe to the top 10 fitness blogs. Also add in a few mixes like yoga, medicine and health in general.
Follow writers from different background, skills and ideas. Don’t try to argue about anything. Simply read and learn from them.
It will give you an idea about how to write, what cover and what generates the most response.
Also, you can avoid some mistakes which you can see the other authors making. When you grasp so much information, you can easily write about that topic next time you sit.
There are many ways to experiment with reading. But first, you need to read a lot. So do that.
When you write about anything, some people are going to get mad. That’s just probability.
You can’t please everyone. And if you try, you will end up being miserable. The best option is to take your thoughts and take a bold step. Write about anything which you have a strong inclination for. It doesn’t have to be 100 per cent right.
Most things aren’t. For example, an author who sold 1000 copies can write about what worked. But that they may not be replicable. And that’s okay. The idea is to share its possible and there is hope.
Remember, you aren’t perfect and you are growing each day. So write whatever you feel is important and strongly about today. Tomorrow is a new day, your opinions might change and that’s okay. Before your readers can enjoy and follow your lead, you need to step up and ask them to lead.
Reading is a cheat code. You can get someone’s one day or one year’s experience in a short span of time. And thus you should do that.
But also, you should experiment on yourself so that you get some first-hand experience. That way, you can add something which wasn’t available before and you can write about many emotions.
For example, if you are a fitness blogger — then run for 30 days. Document each day, draw inference and write an article about your routine, the effects, assumptions and results which you obtained. Such kind of writing is hard. Because you need to put in a lot of work.
And therefore the results are amazing. Even if your writing isn’t appreciated, you did something in your life, you changed it. And that’s a success in itself.
Also, if you are suggesting readers to take the leap of faith and follow certain ideas, you should be eager to try them out too.
Even great writers write a lot of fluff. The trick is to not focus on them. Write your heart out. And then you can look at it next day to edit the article. Better if you can hire someone else to take a look.
Typos, continuity and relevance — are all messed up. Writing is different than talking. When you talk, you can say mumbled words too and your friends might understand. Also, there is a lot of context in talking.
Writing is different, it is communicating with a stranger and the basic grammar allows you to read and understand. So, you need them. But not when you write. Your mind isn’t focused to keep writing while editing. Also, for most people, they are focused and productive only for few hours in a day.
So focus solely on writing. When you are done, you will have the whole day to edit.
Your Level Is Different
Your level of writing won’t become great in one day. So you shouldn’t compare it with the best in the world. Sure, read and understand but don’t stress about it.
The goal is to become better over a period of years. As long as you are improving and making better content, you are fine. Writing is the first half of the equation, using stories, impact and copywriting are essential things which you need to learn.
But for now, focus on writing — the foundation. Wherever you are, trust yourself and share the best story possible. Aren’t we all looking for a good story…
