Chances are you hate your job. Maybe you love it and feel stuck doing the same redundant thing over and over again. You think of doing something great and then you sit and sip another cup of coffee.
Does that sound like you?
Our career is the biggest thing we chase in our lifetime. Do it wrong and your life is a hell. Do it right and you wake up each day with smile and something new to look forward to.
Curious to know what is the mistake we all make.
We get comfy.
Comfortable in our current job and earnings. We love the company and keep on saving and staying happy. This feels good. It is harmful in the long-term plan for your career.
If you are in a job which you hate, then you should constantly look for something more worthy. If you love the job then work on to go up the ladder and get some promotion.
Doing the same job feels good and secure, don’t settle for that.
Challenge yourself, keep pushing and then you will see more better outcomes compared to what you have imagined. You are worth more. There is always something more you can do.
We all want to settle down.
The meaning for settling down is vague. When I grew up, it was having a job, when I had the job then it was earning a set amount of money.
When I had the set amount of money, settling down meant more appliances and the list was never-ending.
The irony being we often compromise our career choices because we feel we are settled currently.
We do it at every stage of our life. Doesn’t matter if you are the fresher in your job or the manager. The moment we feel the current job is the one which had provided settled life, then it makes you harder to move up or do some drastic career change.
Maybe you are doing great at your current job, chances are you can do even greater with new position and responsibility.
If you think you are in the best possible job now, then you might miss many wonderful roles, people and money too. Don’t let this feeling stop you from doing greater good.
You can do more, you can move up the ladder and you can be more awesome. You have to believe it to make it happen and rest will follow with your efforts.
New Opportunities Get Missed
In our day-to-day life we are happy doing the same thing, we often miss opportunities. There are many companies and new start-ups which are coming up very often. With all those companies, there are numerous job opportunities in every career.
Since we aren’t looking for it, we don’t know about it. We don’t apply and we miss them. Sometimes we get full pumped up when our boss shouts at us.
We take pride in quitting the job and start looking something new and challenging. It happens that we look for them for few months and then stop.
That is the another mistake we do.
There are many jobs which don’t get advertised often. You need networks for them. The moment we stop, we lose many chance to grow and take new roles.
Searching for a new job or chasing a new role in your current organization shouldn’t be a task which you do monthly or weekly. It is something you need to do daily.
Subscribe to employment magazines, read employment sections in newspaper and read career blogs which has employers looking for talented people.
Keep looking and keep applying. Before that, you may need to shine your skills.
Leveling Up Your Skill
Moving up in the ladder of success or going to another company don’t have to be tough. It has to be precise. The following 3 steps sums it up.
- Find the skill which is required in new roles.
- Learn, improve on that.
- Apply it and showcase it.
It don’t have to be tough and yet we find ourselves struggling. The reason being we don’t think of leveling up our skills. If you have the same skills and standards then you wouldn’t be offered any great roles.
If you are looking to promote as a manager, then team building, presentation, client-stakeholder co-ordination are the skills which you need handy.
Whatever your next career step, be prepared for it. Work upon it. There are many courses offline and online which will help you in getting more strengths. If you don’t do it, then someone else will and you will see others growing. Do the work and be the one who gets promoted.
Continuous learning and iteration is the key to success.
It is your career, take charge of it and then you will find yourself moving fast. Get a job, master it and then move on – this should be your game plan for life.
Sometimes you will get things slowly, this shouldn’t stop your enthusiasm. Work hard, work smart and be ambitious. It helps.
How else can you advance in your career?
