We have been told many times – judging the book by its cover isn’t good. By doing so we might end up making bad decisions. We might miss on good things because we judged them by other attributes.
For example, in a relationship we are advised to overlook the physical appearance and judge the person based on their characteristics, sense of humor, compatibility and so on. The physical beauty doesn’t tell much on how the relation will progress.
And this is true. There is one problem though. We judge heavily on the appearance despite we say otherwise all the time.
The world isn’t ideal. If it was then there won’t be any need for us to learn, retrospect or analyze. Sadly it is a place where we put emphasize on all the things which we shouldn’t ideally.
80 percent of the time we do judge people on their beauty and approach them only if they fulfill our desires. The personality comes second.
What’s the solution then? What are we supposed to do?
The answer is simple. You need to appear beautiful, attractive and catchy. You need to assume the anyone who will come across you will judge you by the cover.
Here is the thing – if you don’t show off, only genuine people will notice you. And if you do show off then all the people who judge or not will notice you.
Is the attention of the people who judge you worthy?
Yes, it is because most of the times they aren’t being mean. It is how they have been brought up and they do this subconsciously. We do it too.
For example, when you go to the streets – we tend to go to a seller who looks friendly, is smiling or gives a warmth. If someone looks aggressively or has a straight face – we instantly judge. We aren’t being mean here. It is in our psychology that we need to be safe and so we look for safe signs – remember smiling.
Go ahead and work on your craft. Make it worthy enough that when people show interest they find it awesome. And to make people pay attention in the first place, dress it up with anything which will make them attract.
It’s not bad to make a good cover. Just make sure the content is good enough too. Or else people will not come next time you have a fancy cover.
Meaty Content and Fans
Can you reach a stage where you don’t need to have a fancy title, cover or presentation to sell your content? And the answer is “YES”.
But it takes time. First you need to go through the traditional method of having a great cover and put a lot of meaty content which people will love. Slowly those people will follow you and become your fans.
Once enough people know and trust you – you no longer need to impress anyone with a title or cover. Just say it is the new thing and the change people will get.
That would be enough for your fans to buy, try or give a review to your new product. It is all about the change which you can bring to people’s lives. It should touch them and bring out a change which matters to them. For example, if you are a startup then solve problems which enough people care about.
If you are an author then write something which gives people a direction, entertains them or changes their perspective for good.
I Did It Wrong
When I was starting, I didn’t knew about the importance of presentation. Once I graduated in Physics, I went to a coaching center to teach Physics.
The first day – I went in wearing a t-shirt and jeans.
The founder of the center told me, “Professors should look like one. Next time wear a formal shirt and pant.”
I couldn’t comprehend the logic. I asked for the advise from my friend who was working over there. He told me, “In this area most parents have a narrow mind because they aren’t well educated. When to come to admit their students, they have certain expectations.”
For example, they wanted the coaching class to have lavish furniture and materials, teachers number should exceed than other classes and professors should be experienced.
When I wore casual clothes, parents thought I am new and didn’t know my craft well. They perceive my clothing as an indication of my teaching skills.
It doesn’t matter how well I teach, they will judge me by how I look. It only made sense for me to look professional in their eyes if I wanted to attract them.
You Gotta Do The Work
There isn’t any shortcut. Whatever you do there is a simple formula to win. Do the hard work. Don’t sweat yourself looking for shortcuts to success without putting in any work.
You need to go to gym and do the exercises to get those muscles, you need to do the research to come up with a brilliant idea which you can build your company upon.
There isn’t any magic button which will do it for you. Get up and do the work that matters to you and probably fans out there.
