I know you want to level up in your expertise – we all crave for that, right? Except few most of us do. And for those who want to take charge of their career, the world has opportunities beyond our comprehension.
Don’t believe me? Let’s see the future.
20 years ago, the internet and many technologies didn’t exist before. And guess what – you didn’t even think you were lucky. You, me and even the homeless person at the alley are lucky.
We have got so many options to explore, learn and grow. Unfortunately, those same options can sometimes hinder our growth.
I love to dance and sadly I am bad at it too. And I love 10 different things. What should I do? Should I pursue each one of them or let the fate decide what is best for me.
It’s confusing to have so many options. I thought I was the lucky one who has got too many skills up his sleeves. How naive of me. Turns out many people have multiple skill at which they are good enough. I belong in the 80 percent of the people out there.
Yes, you and I are in the same boat. Lots of “good enough” skills, blurry vision of one expert skill and no direction to move ahead and become the best.
You and I can agree on this – we need a laser sharp focus to accomplish the goals which we set for ourselves.
And then vacation happens, we run into family problems and shift our focus. Turns out the internet and the opportunities it brings to the table makes us more confuse and lame.
We see the success story and we want to jump on the roller-coaster. Neither you nor I can be the next Zuckerberg.
Okay, perhaps you can be but the chances are relatively tiny, almost non-existent. What we can do is trying to become a Zuckerberg of our niche. It can mean making a social network for the society you live in.
If you set out to bring the change in the world and impact millions of people then we are gearing up for failure.
Instead, we should focus on the small change which we can bring – 2 people at the start and then scale from there. Success stories, internet riches and the next big thing are all good and we should learn from them.
But you know if I set out thinking I am somewhat great then probably I am lying to you and the world.
Key takeaway: Focus on the small work which brings impact, don’t think big unless you have accomplished at a small-scale.
Shining Object Problem
I am letting you in on a secret. Want to lose your focus and still feeling like achieving something. Enter “Shining Object Problem”.
You have got at least 2 different skills at which you are good enough. And you start by working on one, for example : writing.
You commit to writing 1000 words a day and read 5 Articles a minimum to grow your knowledge. Months pass by and suddenly you see a competition for dance at which you are good enough.
You pack your bags, forget about writing and join the dance class. You end up sticking there for few months and then a cooking class spree happens where everyone in your neighborhood is joining. So you end up joining too.
This is shining object problem. It is the easiest way to lose focus on your work and remain mediocre forever.
What is opposite which you should do – “when you are working on something, stick to it”. There might come opportunities from different skill sets, don’t get tempted. Don’t lose your FOCUS. You will get tons of opportunities or you will create one once you become a master.
Key Takeaway: Focus on one thing which matters to YOU. Don’t let other shining opportunities derail you.
I bet you crave for success, right? And so does everyone else. But the question to ask yourself is “What are you doing to have that success?”
The focus is the starting point to get your day-to-day ritual in place.
For every one of us, success looks a little different. For example, success can be a fit body, loads of money or a book getting published.
There are many things which you need for accelerated success:
Have you read a book about your success?
Have you enrolled yourself in the course to jump the line?
Have you found any mentor?
If you work for 80 years then you might end up in your version of success. But do you want that?
Probably not. We want to grow with rapid speed for that you need do the work. Results come with your persistence.
Here is how to do it. Let’s say your success is to get a fit body. If you don’t see results by eating and exercising by yourself, enroll in a class.
If still no results, get a personal trainer. Go and join the meditation center. There are levels at which you need to do the work. Do them all. There is no magic – you need to do the work. Sometimes the investment required is either time, money or experience.
Get those and move ahead in life. Stop complaining and get yourself an accelerated success, if needed with help from others.
Key takeaway: Invest in yourself, spend money and time on your success path. The only way to win is to keep playing the game.
