Let me tell you one secret – there is no recipe for success which you can apply immediately. There are lessons, takeaways and some guidance. But none of them is the surefire way to victory. Many times you listen to people at the top and wonder about their journey.
And they give vanilla response – one which is fabricated, fancy and aimed to appear cool. No one wants to hear about the sacrifice they made or the pain they have to bear because of their decision. It is easy to tell people they did 10 things and become successful than tell them the truth.
The truth is – they tried many things, failed many times and almost gave up. They toiled hard for hours, sacrificed weekends, broke relationships and felt sick for the most part and somewhere they found the ray of hope. They did the work for 10 years and they worked on their network. And failed again – they realized success isn’t easy, no magic path exists and everyone is working to pull you down. You persist, put in the work again and follow the systems. Only then you become the success you want. And then you need to work even harder to maintain your level of success. The journey seems to begin now.
You learn about your passion – the things which makes you happy. And you hate your current job – you wish to have a job somewhere along your hobby and brings you money. The perfect combination in the world – everyday you will wake up smiling. Work isn’t work anymore.
Passion is something which you would keep doing even if it doesn’t bring you the money. But you do wish that it becomes your source of income.
You wander through the pages of huge magazine – searching for your dream role model. Someone whose journey you can follow and land up there – the success for your passion. There lies your hope, aspiration and the future benchmark. You don’t want to look back and regret – for not following your passion.
After all you could reach the heights if you follow their footsteps. Blog posts, news and social media – you start following anything and everything you can. Loads of motivation posters hang around your mirror. You listen to their interviews and jot down points. And it seems reachable. You tell everyone you trust about your ambition and drop hints for everyone else.
But you don’t seem to go anywhere. The ideas, paths and the obvious hard work isn’t paying off. Your idols are at the level where people expect them to give fairy tale answers. The real struggle is hidden within them.
For example, you may have heard a well established actor saying, “I auditioned for 100 times and I got the role and worked my way up”.
Which is true. But you don’t realize – 1000’s of other talented people auditioned for 100 times too and failed. You need to understand talent alone won’t take you far. And you shouldn’t aim for other people’s success. Try to create your version of end goal. It can be a side-kick in television series or being an editor for a show.
You need a pool of networks who can facilitate introductions, money to learn new things in your expertise and many man hours to put in before you see the spark of the day.
The golden end of the journey might not come ever. And it is okay. Along the way you need to learn to re-set your goals, understand your weak points and accept quitting when it becomes hard. There is no point pursuing something when you have given everything and enough time, leverage and push.
Want to become super successful – decide the breaking points before starting. That way you will know when to quit and pursue a slightly different but dearer goal.
I wanted to become a pro at swimming. And I read a lot swimming gears, techniques and blogs. But I sit at my house watching television. And over the years either the urge goes away or the feeling of regret kicks in. Some of you would feel that swimming wasn’t for you in the first place.
Everything of this is natural. You and I are humans who love procrastinating. Thinking of doing ten different things and doing exactly nothing.
But what if turned the tables. You tried all the 10 things. Failure will knock you often but you will find some things over the course of years where you are strong. Something for which you can become an expert. And if you know when to quit, you might find a decent success. Simple, straightforward and no mess – that’s the recipe for winning goal. Add some mentors and coaching as the flavor and you have a 10/10 recipe for smashing the world.
